Thursday was the 150th anniversary of the proclamation by Alexander II which gave serfs in Russia the chance to leave the land (which remained aristocrats' property) on which they were born. President Medvedev gave an interesting speech on the subject in a Saint Petersburg conference on reform and modernisation.
The date was about two years ahead of President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in the United States.
We used the fact that the first Thursday of the month has free entry to see some temporary exhibitions at the Hermitage, especially The Prado at the Hermitage, which was extremely popular.
In the evening we attended a quite different event in the building of Совиетская Звезда near the Obvodniy Canal. A collaboration between Marat Shemiunov (dance), and Maksim Svishev (projected video) called Day and Night. Shemiunov especially likes to put things in black and white, and some ink drawings and a sculpture in black and white were also on show.
The place was quite well refitted as an art space, it would be interesting to know what else happens there.
